Which Group Does Your Dog Belong To? 1 OF 3

Filed under: Pet Articles — fworth @ 3:27 pm

Aside from being household pets, dogs have been bred to serve specific purposes. The American Kennel Club has classified 157 types of dog breeds and have placed them in groups them according to their nature and purpose.

The dog groups are: Sporting Dogs, Non-Sporting Dog Types, Working Dog Breeds, Hound Breed Type of Dogs, Terrier Breed Type of Dogs, Herding Breed Type of Dogs, and Toy Breed Types of Dogs.

Sporting Dogs or Gun Dogs were bred to hunt game birds with people. There are 26 dog breeds under this group. Some of the breeds work in water; some are more efficient on land, while most are comfortably capable of working on either. They could be subdivided into 3 main categories – the retriever dog that finds and returns killed game to hunters, the pointer dog that stand directs a hunter to a location, and the setter dog that are trained to crouch in front of a game to prevent it from escaping before the hunter captures it with a net.
